Lancashire spinner Stephen Parry completed his first Championship five-wicket haul to help beat reigning champions Middlesex by eight wickets.

Resuming on 156-6 in their second innings, Middlesex added 80 to their overnight score to reach 236, as Dawid Malan completed his half-century.

But when he was eighth out for 52, the first of two wickets for Ryan McLaren, any realistic Middlesex hopes had gone.

Lancashire eased to their target of 108, reaching 111-2 in 30.2 overs.

England Test opener Haseeb Hameed, who has shown a return to form in this match after a run of six successive failures, was still there at the end on 38, partnered by Steven Croft on 34 not out.

England limited-overs international Parry finished with 5-45, well supported by McLaren (3-48), as Lancashire registered their second Championship win of the season.

After removing Tim Murtagh, Parry picked up his fifth wicket, when he trapped Toby Roland-Jones lbw for a very entertaining 31 off 32 balls – to complete his first ‘five-for’ in first-class cricket since his debut against Durham UCCE 10 years ago.

On a day when Yorkshire went top of Division One thanks to a narrow three-run win over Somerset at Taunton, Middlesex’s defeat was their first in the Championship since September 2015, bringing to an end an unbeaten run of 21 games.
