London fire: Builders abandon work at nearby construction site to help Grenfell Tower victims

Dozens of builders abandoned a construction site in Notting Hill to help stricken families in the aftermath of the deadly tower block inferno.

Builders were working on the nearby high rise development just streets away from the blaze when they were warned to leave the site as smoke billowed from the inferno at Grenfell Tower.

The builders then joined hundreds of Londoners in handing out food and water, while setting up tables for people to leave donated clothes.

At least 12 people are now confirmed to have died after an inferno engulfed the Grenfell Tower block in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Many more are unaccounted for.

Engineer Prem Singh, 39, said: “Because we were working on a high rise we were working right at the top. We were told to come down because the smoke was coming towards us.

“It’s quite shocking just hearing how many people who have died and the people who lost their homes and things.

“We’re just going to give food and that to people who are around in the area. We’ll just follow the instructions and see what we can do to help out.”

Families and friends gathered in nearby churches and community centres after seeing their homes destroyed in the blaze.

Victims and family members took shelter in the Latymer Community Church, with a nearby rugby club also caring for people affected.

People have donated suitcases of clothes, while volunteers appealed for cash to help the families.

Builder Joe Gallagher said: “We were waiting for the lads to bring some tables for the community and to help out. We didn’t feel enough was being done.

“No-one’s got any idea what’s going on here.”
