Man tasered after ‘reaching for knife’ outside Palace of Westminster

A man has been tasered outside the Palace of Westminster after he allegedly reached for a knife when approached by officers.

The Metropolitan Police said the incident has not been declared as terrorism-related, but counter-terrorism police will be investigating.

The force also said it will remain “open-minded” as to whether terrorism was a motive.

Officers became aware of the suspect, aged in his 30s, acting suspiciously and then a Taser was discharged after the man allegedly reached for a knife.

At this time it is too early to understand the motivation so we have not declared this a terrorist incident.

However, given the location, the circumstances and recent tragic events, the MPS counter-terrorism command will be investigating this incident.

We remain open-minded as to whether terrorism was a motive.

– Scotland Yard statement

No one was injured in the incident.

The bearded suspect, wearing black trousers and a grey sweatshirt, was led away into a van by officers after being detained for around 30 minutes outside the Houses of Parliament.

He remains in custody at a central London police station, Scotland Yard added.

The man was held with his arms against his back just yards from the forecourt of the building, where Pc Keith Palmer was stabbed to death by terrorist Khalid Masood in March.
