Hero firefighter ‘feared Grenfell Tower would collapse like World Trade Centre’

A firefighter who battled the Grenfell Tower blaze has spoken of how he feared the building would collapse like the World Trade Centre.

Leon Whitley, 34, was one of more than 200 firefighters who rushed to the scene in west London early on Wednesday morning.

The father-of-one told The Sun he would never forget the victims’ screams as he gave a dramatic account of the rescue attempt in the upper floors of the 24-storey building.

He said: “It was reminiscent of the Twin Towers. Those things go through your mind while you’re in there.

“We all know how that building collapsed. I thought We might not make it out this one.

“I usually walk into fires very cautious but not scared. That was the first time I was scared.”

Mr Magee, who arrived at the scene 1.45am and was sent up to the 15th floor, told the newspaper the experience was “hellish”.

He said “It was crazy. The screams were coming from all directions. I don’t think I will ever forget them.

“The screams were horrifying because you knew everyone needed help but you couldn’t see them.”

Thirty people have been confirmed dead in the blaze, while a further 70 people are still missing.

Firefighter Damian Magee previously told Sky News the scene was “like a war zone” and described the sounds of children desperately screaming for help.

He said firefighters dodged flaming debris falling from the tower as they fought the raging inferno.

“I couldn’t tell you how many people were trapped. What I can tell you is the screaming, children screaming,” he said.
