Funeral of tower fire victim Mohammad Alhajali takes place in east London | London

The funeral for Mohammad Alhajali, a victim of the deadly Grenfell Tower blaze, has taken place in a service attended by his family and the Mayor of London.

A week on from the tragedy, which claimed the lives of at least 79, funeral prayers were said for the 23-year-old Syrian refugee, who was the first fatality of the disaster to be formally identified by police.

Attending the ceremony, called a Janazat, at the East London Mosque on Whitechapel Road, the female members of his family watched on from the Maryam Centre as the men joined the main congregation.

After the service, through a statement read by family friend Muzna Alnaib, they said he “loved London and loved the people he met here”, and had begun pursuing his dream of studying engineering.
