Plumes of smoke seen for miles away as fires burn in Canary Wharf and east London scrapyard | London


Huge plumes of smoke could be seen for miles above the London skyline as two fires burned in Canary Wharf and a scrapyard in east London.

London Fire Brigade said fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers are tackling a car storage yard blaze on Ferry Lane in Rainham.

Six lorries, six cars and one 40 foot fork lift truck were alight.

The brigade was called just after 1.20pm. Fire crews from Wennington and surrounding fire stations are at the scene. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers are dealing with a fire on a building site on Prestons Road in Canary Wharf.

A building of three floors under construction is alight.

The Brigade was called just after 2pm.

Fire crews from Poplar, East Greenwich and Plaistow fire stations are at the scene. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

LFB say the Canary Wharf fire is now under control.
