US President Donald Trump tweets in support of Charlie Gard | London

Donald Trump has today tweeted in support of Charlie Gard. The President of the United States said: “If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so.”

Mr Trump’s tweet follows a message made by Pope Francis on Sunday where he wished to “express his closeness to his [Charlie’s] parents”.

“For this he prays that their wish to accompany and treat their child until the end is not neglected.”

Charlie Gard’s life support machine was due to be switched off on Friday 30 June but it has been delayed.

His parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, want 10-month-old Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage, to undergo a therapy trial in the US.

But specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital said the therapy was experimental and would not help.
