Welling fire: Smoke billows into the air as flames ravage south-east London home

Huge plumes of smoke billowed into the air as a fire ravaged a house in south-east London.

Almost 60 firefighters tackled the flames at the house Edison Road, Welling, London Fire Brigade (LFB) has said.

Footage from the scene showed thick smoke billowing into the air as fire crews battled the blaze on Monday evening.

One witness said smoke filled surrounding roads as commuters returned home from work.

Eight engines from stations including Plumstead, Bexley, Eltham and Erith fire stations were at the scene.

The brigade received 14 calls from the public to the fire that broke out shortly before 7.40pm.

In statement, LFB said: “Nearly 60 firefighters and officers are tackling a fire in a semi-detached house on Edison Road, Welling, this evening.

It added: “The cause of the fire is not known at this time.”
