Rail passengers donate £18,500 to Evening Standard Grenfell Tower fund

Rail passengers have donated more than £18,500 to the Evening Standard’s Dispossessed Fund  to help victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

Staff at King’s Cross and other rail stations have been collecting on their days off.

Govia Thameslink Railway trainee driver Nicholas Hair, 23, who helped lead the collections, said: “Passengers were so generous with their change, and many put in large notes.

“I had to make several trips to the bank to pay it all in. Network Rail were very helpful in giving us immediate permission to make the collection. They waived the usual two weeks’ notice.”

The total sum raised for the appeal has passed £5.3 million, with more than 40,000 Evening Standard readers and dozens of corporations contributing.

Initial emergency payments of £1,000 have reached almost every family who survived.

Our fund partner, The London Community Foundation, is working with the Rugby Portobello Trust and the National Zakat Foundation to reach victims.
