‘We don’t trust you’, residents living in shadow of Grenfell Tower tell new council leader | London

Residents living in the shadow of Grenfell Tower have told the new leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council they don’t trust her.

Speaking to ITV News, Elizabeth Campbell said people were right to be angry after the Grenfell disaster and it would take time to rebuild trust.

They have a point. They don’t trust us. And, to rebuild trust it will be difficult because people are feeling very angry and rightly so.

Elizabeth Campbell replaced Nicholas Paget-Brown who resigned amid criticism of its handling of the Grenfell Tower fire.

The new leader felt the full force of residents’ anger after taking over and admitted the council initially failed to support those who needed them most. She added it would take time to rebuild trust.

I think it will be a generation. We can start now but it takes time – it takes time to build trust again.

It’s up to the people who live around there to decide what they want to do with it [the tower].

Ultimately I suspect it has to be knocked down. But I would want to ask people around. We would want to consult them.
