Waitress at exclusive Oxbridge club in Pall Mall ‘fired for taking home piece of lasagne’

A waitress at an exclusive London club says she was sacked for trying to take home a piece of lasagne she hadn’t had time to eat during a busy double shift.

Silvia Mecati said she wrapped the meal in tin foil and put it in her bag after she was given it by the Oxford and Cambridge Club in Pall Mall.

But the 43-year-old, from Camberwell, south London, was stopped by security on her way out and accused of “stealing” it.

The club, whose members have included Oxbridge graduates such as Stephen Fry and former Prime Minister Clement Atlee, dismissed her for gross misconduct at a disciplinary hearing.

Miss Mecati, who worked at the club for three years on a zero hours contract, told The Daily Mail: “As I was leaving the night manager asked to check my bag.

“They had never checked my bag in three years.

“I told him, ‘I have my lunch with me because I didn’t have time to eat it and wanted to take it home’.

“He replied, ‘Did you have written or verbal permission from the chef or a manger to take your lunch home?’ I answered ‘no’.”

The Italian, who has lived in Britain for four years, is appealing after she was fired on July 6.

She had earned just £8.30 an hour, below the London Living Wage, and has been left struggling to pay rent.

The Oxford and Cambridge club declined to comment when approached by the Standard.
