Tube illustration by Sir Quentin Blake for #Londonisopen campaign

Sir Quentin Blake has captured Londoners in all their endless variety for a new illustration to go on display across the Underground network.

The renowned children’s book cartoonist has created the image to celebrate the capital as a welcoming city and to encourage tourists as part of Mayor Sadiq Khan’s London is Open for Summer campaign.

Olympian Tom Daley and Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown appear in a new film released today with children from the Stagecoach Performing Arts School showcasing all the family attractions London has to offer from The Shard to the Coca-Cola London Eye and the Natural History Museum.

TV stars Simon Cowell and Davina McCall and fashion designer Ozwald Boateng also released their own video messages of support for the campaign.

Sir Quentin Blake said: “I did a drawing last year for the ‘London is Open’ evening at the Science Museum, so when I heard that there was an invitation for artists to put forward proposals to publicise the same idea this year, I put everything else aside and did it immediately.”

Mr Khan said: “London is one of the most diverse, thrilling and fascinating cities in the world and it captures the imagination of everyone, young and old.

Sir Quentin Blake’s wonderful illustration brings this spirit to life and shows that London is open to all.

“Our great city is home to so many world-leading museums, galleries, attractions, parks and views – the list is endless – and there really is no greater place to explore over the school holidays. I’m saying loud and clear – London is open for business, creativity, ideas and open to everyone this summer.”
