‘Sky broadband is down and all I want is to watch Netflix’: Frustration as south London internet outage continues into third day

Large parts of south London remain without internet after rats chewed through fibre cables two days ago.

Frustrated TalkTalk and Sky customers in areas including Balham, South Clapham and Tooting were today battling to get online, nearly 48 hours after the problem was first reported.

Both firms have apologised for the ongoing disruption. Sky Help Team tweeted on Friday: “South London. Work continues on repairing broken fibre cables. We have identified the cause of the fault, to be the work of rodents.”

But many customers complained the fault was taking too long to fix, with the outage disrupting their weekends – including plans to binge-watch Netflix.

TalkTalk said the affected areas were Balham, South Clapham, Streatham, Tooting and Vauxhall and blamed damage to Virgin Media cabling.

In an 11am update online, the provider posted: “We’ve been working closely with local Virgin Media engineers who’ve been working through the night to repair the previously damaged cabling.

“Service to some customers has been restored however a total of 96 cables had been damaged and we’re continuing to repair the remaining damaged cables as a priority.”

Sky Help Team tweeted on Saturday morning: “South London. Engineers have continued to work overnight & will continue through the day. More updates to follow.”

TalkTalk and Sky have been contacted for further comment.
