Plan to link Camden and King’s Cross with garden ‘Highline’ given huge boost as funds target is smashed

Plans to transform part of a disused railway between Camden and King’s Cross into a public garden and walkway have been given a major boost after smashing a fundraising target.

The proposals for the Camden Highline, a green space and public footpath that would cut walking time between the two landmarks to 10 minutes, have successfully earned £64,000 of crowd funding support in one month.

Organisers initially aimed to raise £40,000 for the project, which would see the 18 metre wide and eight metre high walkway built on the disused elevated railway tracks near Camden Town station.

Simon Pitkeathley, chief executive of Camden Town Unlimited, the campaign group behind the idea, described smashing the target as a “small but very significant step towards construction.”

Green space: The route would link Camden Town and King’s Cross (Camden Town Unlimited)

The line was intended to be used as part of north London’s Overground network and crosses over eight roads and seven existing bridges between the two popular parts of the capital.

The proposed route would begin above Kentish Town Road and lead eastwards over Caledonian Road towards Camley Street, which leads directly to King’s Cross.

New plans: Organisers initially aimed to raise £40,000 but they smashed that target and raised £64,000 in one month (Camden Town Unlimited)

Campaigners claim it would reduce overcrowding on pedestrian routes around Regent’s Canal, and they continue to urge Londoners to pledge their support for the project online.

Mr Pitkeathley thanked those who donated cash, adding that the money raised will be used for a feasibility study into key details surrounding the initiative.

He added: “As well as the feasibility work the crowdfunding campaign will help pay to set up a new community organisation that will deliver the Camden Highline, and events and workshops that will guide the project’s aims and ambitions.”
