London weather: Remnants of Hurricane Gert could make Monday hottest day in August

Monday could be August’s hottest day as the aftermath of Hurricane Gert sweeps away the recent miserable weather.

Temperatures may edge above 25C in London and the South East as the weekend’s patchy conditions come to an end, forecasters said.

If the mercury hits 26C it will make Monday the hottest day in August so far.

Weather experts at the Met Office said the more “tropical and humid” conditions will be brought by the remnants of Hurricane Gert.

Things to do in London whatever the weather

The former category two hurricane is going to be “wrapped up in existing pressure” and weakened as it moves across the Atlantic Ocean, likely bringing humidity and balminess to the South of England, meteorologist Charlie Powell said.

Though potentially salvaging summer for the South, it could end up bringing wind and wet to the North but that remains uncertain, Mr Powell added.

It is also set to follow a showery Sunday, although temperatures may still be moderately high.

Weekend weather forecast 18 – 20 August

The weather is likely to be more settled by midweek, but it is unclear what to expect over the August bank holiday until the pressure clears.
