London Fields Lido to finally reopen after months of major repairs

A popular east London lido is set to finally reopen following months of repairs to cracking tiles.

London Fields Lido was closed for the entire summer after experts discovered major problems last autumn.

Hackney Council has now revealed the Olympic-sized pool will reopen on September 30, complete with refurbished changing rooms and reception area.

After tiles began coming away from the side of pool early last year, industry experts confirmed that an entire tile and render replacement was required.

Regulars at the lido were upset to discover the work would take months to complete, before it was delayed further by difficulties removing the material beneath the tiles.

A specialist excavator, diamond-tipped cutting equipment and extra staff were brought in and the works are now almost finished.

The council used the closure as an opportunity to refurbish the changing rooms which provide lockers, showers, mirrors and hair dryers. There will also be improved family and baby change facilities.

Cllr Jon Burke, Cabinet Member for Energy, Sustainability and Community Services said: “I am delighted that returning and new users will be able to enjoy better, more modern and accessible facilities when it reopens on 30 September; and obviously we will reopen it sooner if we can.

“I understand that people were disappointed that the Lido had to close, and it is frustrating that some delays were encountered throughout the renovations. Delays are not uncommon with complicated building work but we have been working very hard with the contractor to re-open the Lido as quickly as possible.

“Extra workers and specialist equipment has been brought in and a canopy built over the pool so the works can continue when it rains. My priority is to ensure the works are completed to the highest standard possible, to provide a long-term, sustainable future for this important community asset.”

London Fields Lido is hugely popular with Londoners due to the fact the water is heated.

Hackney resident Ben Alden-Falconer told the Standard after the closure was first announced: “Where else can you swim in crystal clear water under the sun, stars or rain, all year round?

“The fact that it is 50 metres and heated – I still go when it snows – makes it pretty unique.”
