London weather: Strong winds and thundery showers set to batter capital as autumn sets in

Londoners look likely to have enjoyed the last of the summer weather as the capital is braced for strong winds and thundery showers.

Dreary weather is due to set in on Monday as winds of up to 40mph look likely to batter the capital.

The Met Office said London faced “strong winds and thundery showers” as the first low pressure of autumn takes hold.

Cold gusts are due to lash the south-east from Sunday evening and into Monday morning before heavy showers hit overnight and into Tuesday.

Sophie Yeomans, a forecaster from the Met Office, said: “It looks likely to be unsettled and changeable as a low pressure front sweeps in.

“We have a weather warning in place which narrowly misses London but will hit the Essex area by Wednesday morning as winds reach highs of 50mph.”

Ms Yeomans confirmed, however, that the wind was unrelated to Hurricane Irma as the category three storm made landfall in Florida on Sunday.

Temperatures look set to reach highs of 18C on Monday and Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the UK a yellow weather warning has been issued over fears of strong westerly winds sparking travel delays on Monday morning.

A statement released by the Met Office said: “Some delays to travel are likely, with some journeys taking longer than usual. Delays are likely for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges. Some short term loss of power is also possible.”
