Westminster Bridge closed after car bursts into flames

Westminster Bridge has been closed in both directions after a car burst into flames.

Firefighters battled to bring the blaze under control after it broke out at around 7.40pm on Wednesday evening.

Pictures from the scene showed the car engulfed in flames on the road next to Westminster tube station and Portcullis House.

Police confirmed that officers were on the scene and that the fire had been extinguished by 8pm. Nobody was injured during the incident.

A Met Police spokesperson added that the car’s driver was on the scene “being spoken to”.

“The cause is not yet known but is not being treated as suspicious. Road closures are in place,” they added.

Transport for London warned that the road had been closed in both directions at the junction of Parliament Square. Drivers were instructed to use other routes.
