UK weather forecast latest: Snow and sleet forecast in London over weekend as mercury plunges across country


Forecasters have warned that snow and sleet could fall in London over the weekend as temperatures plunge across the country.

A freezing cold snap is expected to grip the UK next week with severe frosts predicted.

The Met Office previously said that the mercury could fall below -10C in some places on Sunday night.

However before then snow and sleet have been forecast in the capital, with flurries possible on Sunday afternoon as temperatures start to plummet.

The Met Office is warning of snow in parts of the country from Wednesday

Forecaster Helen Roberts told the Standard: “Overnight tonight we have got a frontal system moving in from the west bringing in precipitation.

“Tomorrow for the vast majority there will be cold temperatures, there will be bands of rain which will be sleety over hills and there will be snow on higher ground in the north.

“We have a yellow weather warning in Scotland and northern England for ice.”

She added: “On Sunday for most it will be much better but during the afternoon we will see some showers in the south east.

“By that point it will be very cold across the country. It will feel particularly cold with a brisk east/north easterly wind.

“There is chance snow will fall in London, although this may fall as sleet.”

Ms Roberts added that the UK will wake up to widespread frost on Monday, while by Tuesday snow is forecast to fall in a number of places across the country.

She said: “Into next week it remains very cold. It will be really very cold on Sunday night with a widespread frost developing.

“On Tuesday a weather system will move in from the west that could bring snow – we could see a couple of centimetres fall in some places.”
