A disused public toilet in Tottenham is being converted into a new pub, and is due to open in a few weeks time.

Located in the Tottenham Green Conservation Area, the former public toilet at the junction of Tottenham High Road and Monument Way is, despite its disused status, a local landmark in Tottenham.

After being vacant for a number of years, the building has been renovated by Haringey Council. The project has been part funded by the Mayor of London’s Growth on the High Road project, which aims to improve Tottenham High Road and make it a more attractive place to shop, meet and socialise.

The new pub, called The High Cross takes its name from the historic monument close by – marking the centre of what was Tottenham village in the 17th Century – and aims to maintain much of the toilet’s original features from the 1920s.

Co-founder, Chris Johnson said that they’re keeping the ‘Ladies’ and ‘Gentlemen’ signs outside and will light them up at night, while inside they’ve kept a lot of the original tiles as well as the original dividing walls.

“To turn this site into something completely different from what it was before is very exciting,” said the other co-founder, Alex who will be working in the bar. “Our background is in public houses so we’ll be serving local beers as well as coffees and teas and soft drinks and they will all be reasonably priced in our ‘micro pub’”.

The High Cross will be open for business in the next few weeks.
