‘The Nike advert is everything’: Londoners hail incredible film starring Harry Kane, Mo Farah and Skepta as a ‘fantastic celebration’ of the capital

Londoners have hailed a new advert from Nike as a “fantastic celebration” of the capital after it went viral online.

Featuring the likes of England striker Harry Kane, grime star Skepta and Olympic hero Mo Farah, the three minute film boasts: “Nothing beats a Londoner.”

It shows how stars in the capital have overcome difficulties such as family pressure, weather and travel problems to rise to the top of their fields.

The ad – released on Friday and shot in areas including Dalston, Peckham and Brixton – includes cameos from a host of the best-known faces in the capital.

As well as Kane, footballers such as Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi put in appearances – as does England coach Gareth Southgate, who plays God.

Meanwhile Skepta, known for his hit single Shutdown, is shown hopping on a Boris Bike, sprinter Dina Asher-Smith celebrates on a running track, and Mo Farah acts as an Olympic alarm clock while London’s stars of tomorrow battle early mornings, late nights, wind, rain and even an icy River Thames.

The advert has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times since being posted online – with scores of Londoners using social media to tell of their pride in their city.

BBC radio DJ Nihal Arthanayake tweeted: “That NIKE advert is everything right now. When my Londoner kids see that they are going to flip.”

He added: “This NIKE advert has really made me see my trainer collection differently. I had no idea you could play sport in them too.”

Others flooded Twitter to speak of their pride at their home city.

But not everyone was impressed.

Several people from elsewhere in the UK hit out at Nike’s London-centric ad, with many calling for rival sports giant Adidas to produce one for another British city.

Others bemoaned what they claimed was a lack of Asian representation in the advert.

In the next half-term week – Friday 9th-18th February – Nike will be celebrating sport with over 75 of their sponsored athletes heading into local communities to inspire Londoners at 250 venues.

“London is a sports obsessed city and its intersection with culture sparked by the next generation of youth, is shaping a new wave of creative expression and celebration of sports,” said Nike’s Jamie McCall.

“‘Nothing Beats a Londoner’ puts a spotlight on this vibrant youth culture and a more exciting, inclusive sports community with Nike at the heart of getting more kids moving across the city.”
