Pensioner found next to mobility scooter eight months after disappearing | London

The family of a pensioner found lying next to his mobility scooter nearly eight months after he disappeared were relieved but sad it took so long for him to be discovered.

James ‘Jim’ Middleton, 70, was last seen leaving his home in Epsom in Surrey heading on his scooter towards Ashtead Common in July last year.

He had Parkinson’s and early onset of dementia and failed to return home.

Numerous searches have been carried out since then by specialist search trained police officers, Surrey and Sussex Search and Rescue volunteers, other specialist units, Jim’s family and friends and the local community.

Searches were stopped in September until four weeks ago as winter made bushes and undergrowth less dense in the 500 acre ancient wooded common with over 2,300 ancient oak pollards located in north-east Surrey.

Around 1pm on Sunday the body was found by a members of the Sussex Community Search Team

His blue mobility scooter was found near the body and Surrey Police are treating the death as unexplained.
