One dead, five injured after a fire rips through shops | London

A man has died and five people taken to hospital after a fire ripped through two shops.

London Fire Brigade sent 58 firefighters to tackle the fire in Tolworth, Surrey.

The roofs of both buildings have been left with exposed wooden beams as the fire burnt through the ceiling.

Smoke can still be seen rising from the buildings more than three hours after the emergency services were called.

A crowd of passers-by gathered at the edge of the cordon as firefighters used a ladder to try and extinguish the flames.

Firefighters were called to Tolworth Rise South at 4.55am this morning.

Met Police confirmed one man was pronounced dead at the scene and another five were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.

It is not yet known what caused the fire, a spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said.

Tolworth sits close to Hampton Court Palace, near of Richmond Park in south west London.

TFL said there are no restrictions on the main A3 road, but that this could change if the blaze gets worse.
