Mayor Sadiq Khan to press ahead with new tolls for diesel vehicles in London | London

Sadiq Khan today vowed to press ahead with new tolls for diesel vehicles in London despite the government’s refusal to bankroll a compensation scheme.

City Hall estimates 60,000 drivers a day will be affected by the new Ultra Low Emission Zone in central London.

Diesel cars, vans and motorbikes which fail to meet Euro 6 emissions standards will be hit by a £12.50 charge from April next year.

Toxic air in London is said to cause more than 9,000 premature deaths every year.

The mayor called on the government to bankroll a national diesel scrappage scheme to compensate owners of older vehicles but ministers last week rejected the idea.

I think the government’s got its head in the sand when it comes to the poor quality air. We’re going to proceed with the Ultra Low Zone.

Particulate matter and nitrogeon dioxide leads to premature deaths, it leads to adults having all sorts of health problems.

We’ve got to move away from our dependency on these noxious vehicles.’

– SADIQ KHAN, MAYOR OF LONDON
