Police tell London’s scooter owners to ‘LOCK, CHAIN, COVER’ in new campaign to halt moped gang scooter thefts

Police have urged Londoners to “lock, chain and cover” their scooters to stop them being stolen and used in crime by moped gangs.

The Met’s new Be Safe campaign, launched after 14,000 stolen scooters and motorcycles were used to commit 23,500 crimes in London last year, has the strapline: “LOCK, CHAIN AND COVER to make your scooter less visible to thieves”.

The video shows a man bolting the wheel of his moped and throwing a cover over it, making it seem to disappear into thin air while a prowling moped gang rides past.

The advice asks scooter and motorcycle owners to:

Use a disc lock to help secure the front brake disc, or a grip lock to secure the brake and throttle controls

Use a chain lock through the back wheel (the front wheel can be removed). Secure your bike, with the lock taut to an immovable object such as a ground anchor

Cover the bike as it makes it less attractive and harder for thieves to steal.

As they released the shocking figures, police said stolen mopeds are being used in offences such as robberies and theft-snatches, but also in violent crime and to courier weapons and drugs.

In October, the Met introduced new techniques to clamp down on moped gangs, using scrambler bikes, automatic tyre deflation devices and DNA sprays.

They said that since summer 2017, scooter and motorcycle theft has dropped 52 per cent while moped-enabled crime has fallen 47 per cent.

But they hope that by urging Londoners to make their mopeds less visible, it could help clamp down further.

Assistant Commissioner Martin Hewitt, Territorial Policing, said: “Today, I’d like to ask all scooter or moped users in London to become a part of our effort to make life harder for these criminals. Lock, chain, and cover your bike when you leave it. It is simple, yet effective, and if it makes a thief think twice before stealing your bike then it’s worth it.”
