Canvey Island: Two teenagers arrested after five pedestrians hit by car | Anglia

Two teenagers have been arrested after five pedestrians were hit by a car in Essex.

A blue BMW car collided with the male pedestrians as they were walking along Furtherwick Road in Canvey Island just after 4pm on Saturday afternoon.

The two people in the car then got out and fled the scene. Police have since established that the car was stolen.

Five men aged in their early 20s were taken to various hospitals across Essex and London.

Three of them are still being treated for their injuries, but it’s not thought that their condition is life-threatening.

A 17-year-old boy from Canvey has now been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

An 18-year-old man from Canvey is also being questioned on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, aggravated vehicle taking, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop after an accident, failing to report an accident and driving without insurance.

Police have also confirmed that reports in some newspapers that the crash happened as a result of a police pursuit are incorrect.

However, the force have referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Complaints due to the fact that officers were in the area at the time responding to an unrelated incident.
