48-storey tower planned for Argos site on Old Kent Road [15 May 2018]

Plans to replace four shops on the Old Kent Road with hundreds of homes have been made public this week.

The retail park, located on the opposite side of Humphrey Street from the Tesco Southwark superstore, is owned by the Strathclyde Pension Fund.

The current tenants are Argos, Sports Direct, Carpetright and DFS.

DTZ Investors have made a technical submission – an Environmental Impact Assessment scoping opinion request – to Southwark Council in advance of a full planning application.

The submission reveals that architects Pilbrow & Partners have designed a scheme for up to 800 homes on the site, in buildings up to 48 storeys high.

The development will also include a 250-room 16-storey hotel as well as retail space.
