Arsenal let Arsene Wenger coaching staff go as Mikel Arteta emerges as favourite | London

Arsenal have started a clearout of their backroom staff following the departure of manager Arsene Wenger, as former midfielder Mikel Arteta becomes the favourite to replace the Frenchman.

The Gunners hierarchy have so far told Colin Lewin, head of the club’s medical department, he can leave, while Neil Banfield, Gerry Peyton and Tony Colbert, with Paul Johnson will also depart.

Wenger’s long-term coach Boro Primorac will also leave Arsenal.

Arteta is the leading candidate to become the club’s new manager for next season. The Spaniard spent five years playing for Arsenal under Wenger before joining Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City in the summer of 2016.

Patrick Vieira, another former Arsenal skipper and current City Football Group employee, is also in the frame for the role.

Whoever does take charge is likely to employee Steve Bould and Jens Lehmann who were previously on the staff with Wenger.
