redevelopment plans published [16 May 2018]

The Muslim Association of Nigeria has submitted a planning application to build a new mosque to replace its current place of worship on the Old Kent Road.

The scheme – designed by architects Atelier UWA – would see the current three-storey building replaced by a six-storey mosque with a worship space as well as sports and youth facilities, multi-function halls and a business incubator.

The mosque opened in 1999 in the former Duke of Kent pub at the corner of Old Kent Road and Rowcross Street.

The congregation soon outgrew the building and plans for a purpose-built mosque have been worked on for many years. A 2011 proposal to move to a site further down the Old Kent Road didn’t come to fruition.

In 2010 the Muslim Association of Nigeria was honoured at the Southwark Civic Awards for its inter-faith, education and community work.
