‘Sickening’ moment ref is chased and attacked by huge group after amateur cup final in north London

An amateur referee was chased and attacked by a large group of footballers at the end of a cup final in north London.

Footage showed the ugly scenes erupt at the final whistle of a match at the New River facility in Wood Green, between two teams from the Turkish Community Football Federation.

The league has reportedly opened an investigation into the incident and has called one of the clubs involved for a disciplinary hearing.

The clip, which has been shared widely online, shows the ref attempting to run away from the pitch as a large group of players and fans chase him.

One man manages to trip him with a flying kick before another wrestles him to the ground. More then arrive and begin aiming kicks at the defenceless ref.

An official from the Turkish Community Football Federation told TalkSport: “It is horrible and sickening. Once we know who was involved we want to get rid of them from our league, whoever they are.

“We will throw the book at them.”

The Met Police have been made aware of the incident.

The London FA told TalkSport in a statement: “We have received reports about a match incident which took place on the 20 May.

“We are in the process of conducting an investigation and as such have nothing further to say at this time.”

Martin Cassidy of Ref Support UK said it was “definitely” the worst footage he had seen of an assault on a match official in the UK.

The Turkish Community Football Federation was established in 1976 in order to bring Turkish communities from across London together through sport.

It currently runs two open-aged leagues and two veteran leagues.
