Green for Grenfell 2018: Tower lit up as London unites for vigil to mark one year since devastating fire

Grenfell Tower has been illuminated green as the community comes together to mark one year since the devastating fire at the west London high-rise claimed 72 lives.

In a show of solidarity across the capital’s skyline, landmarks including the London Eye and Downing Street are also expected to be floodlit green as part of the poignant display across the capital.

Twelve tower blocks near Grenfell were illuminated from 54 minutes past midnight, the time of the first 999 call reporting the fire, to mark exactly twelve months since the June 14 tragedy.

It is part of a series of commemorations and vigils taking place this week to remember the victims of the fire, which was the most deadly domestic blaze since the Second World War.

Grieving members of the north Kensington community have also gathered for a 24-hour vigil, at which the names of the 72 victims will be read out at a private service in St Clement’s Church.

Relatives, survivors and friends of victims walked towards the tower to hold a vigil in front of the floodlit building.

Floral tributes were left in the area alongside banners that read messages such as: “Always loved” and “forever in our hearts”.

From 11am, there will be a service of remembrance at St Helen’s church organised by campaign group Relative Justice Humanity for Grenfell.

Clarrie Mendy, who lost two family members in the fire and organised the anniversary event, said 73 doves will be released outside the church.

She said: “It’s a service of healing, community, inclusivity and solidarity, to know we are not alone.

“We’ll be releasing 73 white doves. Why 73 instead of 72? One for the unknown. If there were more than 72, we will put one for the unknown.”

Grenfell families: ‘wounds still cut deep’ ahead of first anniversary

The tower is now completely covered by white sheeting, with banners featuring the green Grenfell heart and the words “Grenfell forever in our hearts” showing across the four highest floors.

Thirteen buildings in total will light up green until 5am today. For the following for evenings they will be illuminated from 8pm until midnight.
