Safety warning to football fans as World Cup celebrations see supporters jumping off buses, climbing lampposts and riding on car roofs

Police in London have issued a warning to football supporters to remain sensible and safe in their celebrations as over-zealous fans jumped off buses and dented emergency service cars.

Streets across the capital were packed out with fans on Saturday afternoon after England defeated Sweden 2-0 in the World Cup, propelling them to the semi-finals for the first time in 28 years.

Ecstatic Londoners spilled out of pubs and beer gardens singing football chants and letting off flares.

Some were seen climbing to the top of lampposts and others shouting their joy from the top of double-decker buses.

One video shared on social media showed a topless fan shouting from the top of a bus near London Bridge, egging the crowd on below as the sung and clapped.

He then jumped off the roof of the bus onto a nearby bus shelter but, instead of landing on it, fell through it.

Another image, shared by the London Ambulance Service joint response team, showed an emergency car with its bonnet dented because excited football fans had jumped on it.

“Obviously we are chuffed with the result this afternoon but there is absolutely NO excuse to vandalise emergency service vehicles by jumping on them,” the account tweeted.

“This vehicle is now off the road and unable to respond to patients. We are better than this England…”

“Great to hear the cheers around the ward!” one police account tweeted. “Let’s celebrate sensibly but have fun everyone.”

The Met’s Events Twitter wrote: “If you’re in central London celebrating #PrideinLondon #worldcup please be mindful of vehicles on the roads which have not been cordoned off.

“Crowds can easily cause traffic/congestion and we want to ensure vehicles get through safely and public transport can continue running.”

Fans were overjoyed after Harry Maguire and Dele Alli scored for their team in the crunch game on Saturday.

Prince William and David Beckham led celebrations after England stormed to victory.
