Donald Trump ridiculed after saying he’s met Vladimir Putin ‘two and a half times’

Donald Trump has been ridiculed on social media after saying he has met Vladimir Putin “two and a half times”.

The US president made the claim while speaking at a joint press conference with Theresa May at Chequers on Friday afternoon.

Mr Trump was asked about his much-publicised criticism of Nato this week, and whether he is “giving Russian President Putin the upper hand heading into your talks given that you are challenging these alliances that he seeks to break up and destroy”.

The pair are set to hold their long-delayed first official summit in Helskinki on Monday.

As part of the answer, Mr Trump said: “I don’t know, I’ve met him twice, maybe three times, two-and-a-half times.

“If we could develop a relationship which is good for Russia, good for us, good for everybody that would be great.”

Mr Trump began his answer by describing the question as “such dishonest reporting” before adding: “We have left Nato with more money, with more unity, with more spirit that Nato has probably ever had.

“We have a strong, powerful Nation, when I became president we didn’t.”

He added: “When you look at what we have done in terms of Russia I guarantee whoever it is in Russia they are saying ‘gee I wish Trump was not the victor in that election’

“We have been far tougher to Russia than anybody, I’m not going to go down 100 years but we have extremely tough in Russia.”
